Combine Images III

Suppose you added a feather to your selection in hopes of avoiding harsh edges when you moved the image onto its new background.

If the image you are moving is on a background which is very similar to the destination image’s background, then it’s okay to apply a feather to the selection. However, if the backgrounds are different, you’ll have problems.
For example, I’ve added a three pixel feather to the flower, and moved it onto the ferns, below. If you look closely at the lower left quarter of the picture, you’ll see a dark rim around the flower which came from its original background.

Below is a magnified image of the edge on the left side of the flower. Had the original background been a different color, the problem would have been even more pronounced. However, even with very similar backgrounds, the shading can be different, or a line or texture can be carried over on any portion of the moved image’s edge.
So, we will move the flower with no feathering. There are ways of softening the edges once we get the flower onto its new background.
